AURORA HIGH SCHOOL LOCKDOWN JUST A PRECAUTION

On Friday morning a student at Aurora High School reported to the teachers and administrators that something suspicious was handed to another student outside the building. The student thought it may be a weapon. The student rightfully reported this suspicious activity and the school administrators locked down the school. The Aurora police investigated the incident and determined that there was no weapon involved. The item that appeared of a concern was a camera and microphone used in the video broadcasting class.
We are proud of the student who reported this incident and we thank the police for their prompt response and investigation. Our students and teachers were remarkable during the hour and half that it took to complete the investigation.
As a reminder to parents, in the event of a lockdown, there will be no calls answered in the office of the building in lockdown. Also, the police may block entrances and exits to driveways and buildings, as they did today at AHS.

AURORA HIGH SCHOOL DRUG SCAN TOOK PLACE ON APRIL 6, 2010

In a planned and scheduled event between the Aurora City Schools, the Aurora Police Department and neighboring communities who have trained “drug dogs,” the schools conducted both a training and drug scan of Aurora High School. Each year the district conducts an unannounced drug scan which includes canines specially trained to locate drugs. At 9:45 a.m. the school administrators secured students in the classes while the dogs checked lockers inside the building as well as vehicles in the parking lots. Typically, drug scans take approximately 30 minutes depending on the number of dogs available.
During this activity, no visitors were allowed to enter the building, nor were students allowed to exit the school.
Once again, this was a planned and scheduled activity that the school and the city jointly worked together on to insure our schools and community are safe and drug free. In the event any drugs or paraphernalia are found, both the school and the police will work together to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary action. No drugs or paraphernalia were found during this search.
The Aurora City School District would like to thank the following police departments for their support in our efforts to maintain a drug free and safe environment for our students; Aurora, Bainbridge, Euclid, Perry, Seven Hills, South Euclid and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department.

AURORA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT RENEWAL LEVY ON MAY 4, 2010 ELECTION BALLOT

The Aurora City School District has placed a Renewal Levy, Issue #3, on the upcoming May 4, 2010 election ballot. This renewal levy is a continuance of the existing levy and WILL NOT increase current taxes for Aurora residents.
This levy is important to the Aurora City School District because the revenues that are generated from this levy are used for general fund expenditures, such as personnel salaries/benefits, curriculum purchases, transportation costs, utilities and daily operating expenses. Approximately $3.18 million dollars, which is over 10% of the schools’ day-to-day operating expenses come directly from this levy. This is a significant part of the Aurora City School Districts’ operating budget.
With renewal of this levy, the Aurora City School District will be able to continue the superior academic programs currently in place. Levy funds also help to obtain qualified/experienced staff, increase property valuation and maintain the district’s high quality reputation. Passage of this levy also protects the investments that have already been made in the Aurora City Schools.
The Aurora City School District offers a high quality education and exceptional reputation that parents and community members can rely on. The Aurora Schools’ appreciate the support and assistance received from the Aurora community.

HARMON SCHOOL SHOE COLLECTION FOR HAITI A BIG SUCCESS!
The Harmon Middle School “Shoes for Haiti” collection earlier this year was a big success! There were approximately 650 pairs of new and gently used shoes that were donated for those in need after the earthquake in Haiti!
The shoe collection was sponsored by the 6th and 7th grade student councils. A group of dedicated parents took the donated shoes and drove them to Massillon, Ohio where a charitable organization then had them delivered to Haiti. These shoes, and the protection they provided from both the dangerous terrain and the elements there, were much needed and appreciated.
Thank you to all those people who donated the shoes and made such a great effort to get them to Haiti!

NUMBER OF LICE INCIDENTS TYPICALLY INCREASE IN SPRING

Along with the arrival of spring also comes the increased risk of incidents involving lice. It can happen all year long, but particularly after a holiday break, winter vacation, and spring break, too. There are several factors for the typical rise in number of cases including spring sports, such as baseball, and travel over vacations.
Periodic inspections by parents can help to detect individual head lice early. This way the lice can be treated when easier to control. Early detection and quick removal of lice and nits will help to contain the number of children exposed. Reminding children not to share items, such as combs or hats, with other children can help to limit exposure. Having them bring their own pillow cases to sleepovers and promptly washing them upon return will also reduce the chance of contracting and spreading lice.
Please click on the links below to learn more about lice and lice removal.

H1N1 INFLUENZA IMMUNIZATION SECOND DOSE CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 12, 2010

The Portage County Health Department, in conjunction with the Aurora City Schools, will be conducting the second H1N1 Influenza immunization clinic on January 12, 2010. This clinic is the follow-up clinic to the H1N1 vaccination clinic that was conducted at the Aurora City Schools on December 1, 2009. This clinic is scheduled ONLY for those students nine years old and under, that have already received the first dose of the vaccination.
These vaccinations are voluntary and will again be FREE to students. This follow-up vaccination is strongly recommended for those students nine years old and younger that received the first vaccination. Children nine years old and younger need two doses for full protection against the H1N1 virus. According to Sandy Petti, Aurora Schools’ Head Nurse, students nine years old and younger must receive the second vaccine in order to “achieve the fullest amount of immunity protection against the virus.” This second dose of vaccine completes the series of two vaccinations that are needed for students nine and younger. This vaccine will only be administered in the shot form.
The Portage County Health Department will be conducting the clinics and administering the vaccines at Miller, Craddock and Leighton Elementary Schools.
Information, along with a new parental permission form, regarding the clinic will be sent home in book bags with those students who are eligible to receive the second dose on Thursday, January 7, 2010. Please look for these in book bags on Thursday, January 7 or Friday, January 8, 2010. We have a link below where you can also print a copy of the H1N1 second dose vaccination parent permission form. As noted on the consent form, you must include when the first dose was given. The first clinic was given at the Aurora City Schools on December 1, 2009. Parents that want to have their student receive the second vaccine must return the completed permission form to school by January 12, 2010.
If you have any questions regarding this H1N1 Influenza clinic for the second dose of vaccine, please contact your school nurse or the Aurora School Board office.

AURORA CITY SCHOOLS' HOLIDAY GIVING SPREADS JOY THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY

Once again, each of the schools in the Aurora City School District has been instrumental in spreading holiday cheer to families in need this holiday season. Support for these various giving projects has been immense! The many generous families and organizations of our community have shown an outpouring of time and donations to help make this possible. Some of these projects include:
Aurora High School
A collection has been established for new hats and gloves for children. These donations will be accepted until December 22, 2009. A box has also been set-up by the office for any Coats for Kids donations.
Harmon Middle School
The Coats for Kids holiday project is accepting donations for gently used coats, hooded sweatshirts, and sweatshirts that are needed to help keep children warm this winter. Donations will be accepted until December 21, 2009.
Leighton Elementary School
The Leighton 2009 annual Flurry of Gifts campaign has now ended. All of the many wonderful gift donations will be distributed to children and senior citizens in Portage County by the Salvation Army. The Leighton students and staff were able to provide about 25% of the approximately 1,000 children in need in Portage County with contributions! We appreciate all of the work The Leighton Leaders and the Salvation Army has done to make this a success! Please see the Leighton school webpage photo gallery for a flurry of pictures!
Craddock/Miller Elementary School
The staff Caring for Children – Giving Tree at Craddock and Miller Schools will make the holidays that much brighter for the 22 families (54 children) that will be receiving the tremendous contributions from staff and administration members and various individuals, community businesses and organizations that can be found listed on Ms. Mazzella’s School Counselor webpage. You can also view pictures of these contributions on the webpage.
We are very proud of the tremendous effort and generous contributions that have been given by all those involved in the many ways our school | |
